"if i wasn't actually in to all this stuff why would I put myself out there to a world that isn't always super welcoming of me?" is a really great question. Why would anyone do that?

I know there are fanbases i'm part of that I get grief from but i'm part of them because I personally love them! Not because a bunch of people that happen to be the same gender as myself like it. Noone should want to be in to something solely because it's popular or because it's tailored to a demographic.

It should be due to the quality of the storytelling, not the gender of the protagonist or author. That's the difference between empathy and sympathy. Sympathy only works if you can understand through relation. Empathy requires more from yourself, to place yourself in someone else's situation.

You shouldn't need a "geek guide" to teach you how or WHY to love what you love.
